Stop & Shop Donates $1 Million
to Governor Pataki's World Trade Center Relief Fund

The Power of Charity - Stop & Shop Supermarket CEO and President Marc Smith (left) presents New York Governor George Pataki with a check for $1,000,000 as a contribution toward the World Trade Center Relief Fund as part of the company’s effort to touch the lives of those affected by the Sept. 11th attack. Stop & Shop executives Faith Weiner and Chris Williams (center left and right) joined in the ceremony. Stop & Shop customers contributed to the effort, with the supermarket company matching the donations.

Because the pain does not go away for those left behind after the murders of thousands on September 11th, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Company has presented New York Governor George Pataki with a $1,000,000 contribution for the governor's World Trade Center Relief Fund.

"Stop & Shop takes enormous pride in being able to support the governor’s initiative that seeks to reach those whose world has been shattered by the events of September 11th," said Marc Smith, President and CEO of Stop & Shop.

"By launching the American Heroes Fund, we were able to assist the disaster relief efforts in a meaningful way and show support for New York and our nation in its time of need. We are grateful to Governor Pataki for his leadership at this crucial time in America's history and proud that Stop & Shop customers and associates were able to help make a difference."

Governor Pataki praised Stop & Shop for creating the American Heroes Fund as a grass roots effort that’s making a difference. "Stop & Shop's corporate commitment is enabling New York to help those who require our assistance to receive the aid they so desperately need. I want to offer my thanks to Stop and Shop, their customers, and their employees who contributed to the fund."

The American Heroes Fund was designed to allow customers and associates to make contributions at their local Stop & Shop. Ahold USA, Stop & Shop's parent company, supported the program by matching funds collectively raised on a dollar-for-dollar basis up to $1,000,000.

Stop & Shop Seeks to Create
Supermarkets That Meet The Needs
 of 21st-Century Long Island Consumers

Forging Alliances -- Jack Kennedy of the Nassau Suffolk Building Trades (left) meets with Stop & Shop real estate vice president Jim Sylvia. Jim's colleague, Frank Maglio (right), looks on.

At Stop & Shop supermarkets throughout Long Island, a team of specialists is looking at how best to improve, expand and strengthen the various stores that provide tens of thousands of consumers with everything from fresh produce, dairy and meat to cereals, snacks and beverages.

Jim Sylvia, real estate vice president for the company, stated, "There is a clear and obvious mandate from the consumer. We are to make sure that each trip to a Stop & Shop meets the needs of people living in a fast-paced society where often, both parents work, and ‘flex’ schedules require profoundly different working hours than earlier generations of Long Islanders. Our stores are not only expected to be clean inside and out, but well-lit, well stocked with a broad array of goods and services, and competitively priced. All of that requires new and efficient use of space, and that is my task."

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company operates 325 supermarkets in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey, and employs more than 56,000 associates.

Given the amount of construction being planned by Stop & Shop, Sylvia recently met with the Nassau Suffolk Building Trades and its president Jack Kennedy.

"Stop & Shop has consistently demonstrated that it is a strong corporate partner committed to protecting the region's economy. We look forward to working with Jim and his team in the years to come as they look to create supermarkets that protect our quality of life and enhance the value of our communities," Kennedy said.

Desmond Ryan, executive director of the Association for a Better Long Island stated, "Stop & Shop is clearly engaged in a multimillion dollar campaign that will either build new supermarkets for a 21st-Century Long Island market or improve the ones they purchased from companies no longer in the marketplace. Either way, it represents the economic strengthening of a portion of our economy that sets the pace for a broad spectrum of economic indicators, including residential property values in the neighborhoods they serve."

Sylvia says regardless of where they build a supermarket, or rebuild existing ones, a central factor is the creation of a working partnership with the neighboring community. "We cannot allow ourselves to ever think we can run a supermarket in a vacuum. We have good neighbor programs in place that must connect with our neighbors and be responsive to their concerns," he said.

Stop & Shop’s Triple Winner Program
Helps Raise Funds to Benefit
The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
-- Farmingville Consumer Wins $10,000 --

Winning for Charity -- Mary Fischman of Farmingville is a $10,000 Stop & Shop Triple Winner. Joining Mary are her husband Joseph (left) and Farmingville Stop & Shop store manager Ken Soricelli.

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company continues to partner with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to bring its Triple Winner program to Long Island. Triple Winner, now in its 12th year, is Stop & Shop's largest and most successful annual charitable effort.

Triple Winner allows customers who make a $1 donation in a Long Island Stop & Shop store to receive a Triple Winner game ticket. The Triple Winner Game is a scratch-card promotion in which every ticket is an instant winner of either a free product, gift certificate, or cash prize up to $10,000. All money raised from the Triple Winner program in Stop & Shop's New York and New Jersey stores directly benefit The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the premier cancer research and treatment facility in the region.

"Commitment to the community is the hallmark of Stop & Shop's corporate philosophy," commented Stop & Shop President and CEO Marc Smith. "Triple Winner has been very successful in helping us to take an active role in the fight against cancer. With the help of our associates and customers, we benefit cancer research and care at Sloan-Kettering."

To date, the Triple Winner program has raised more than $20 million to support cancer research.

Mary Fischman of Farmingville won $10,000 through Triple Winner after participating in the scratch-card program.

During the award ceremonies Mary was joined by her husband, Joseph, and Farmingville Stop & Shop store manager Ken Soricelli.

Soricelli noted, "This effort has not only raised a significant amount of dollars for cancer research, but has also created a lot of excitement among our customers and the community. This is really an opportunity to give something back and ensure that there are significant dollars earmarked for this important cause."

Northport Stop & Shop Sponsors
Oral Histories Program
to Capture Long Island’s Responses
to the World Trade Center Attack

Capturing Long Island’s Memories -- Stop & Shop Supermarket in Northport and Friends for Long Island's Heritage worked together to create an oral histories program that will capture the memories of Long Islanders responding to the September 11th attack on America. The program was launched by Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone (right) and Mark Sovyrda, the Stop & Shop store manager in Northport.

Stop & Shop Supermarket in Northport and Friends for Long Island's Heritage have announced that the supermarket is sponsoring an oral histories program that is capturing the memories of Long Islanders responding to the September 11th attack on America. The effort is part of a comprehensive program to preserve for posterity the courage, valor, and sacrifice of all New Yorkers in wake of the murderous assault. Jerry Kessler, president of the Friends, said that Stop & Shop's sponsorship enabled them to add a strategic dimension to the archives. The histories are being prepared in cooperation with the Friends for Long Island's Heritage, Hofstra University's Long Island Studies Institute and the LI Archivists Roundtable.

Unveiling the program, Kessler noted, "These archives will serve as a permanent repository that chronicles our community's response to the terrorist assault."

Other artifacts include surgical face masks offered to Ground Zero workers by medical supplier Henry Schein of Melville, manifests for food and water delivered by Stop & Shop supermarket convoys, and an emergency directive issued by county officials.

"We are proud to be able to sponsor a program that will serve to remind future generations that Americans on Long Island stood tall against the attacks meant to cripple our spirit and destroy our future," stated Mark Sovyrda, the Stop & Shop store manager in Northport. "This is an effort that will ensure our thoughts, insight, and courage in the face of terrorism will not be lost to time. It’s a thoughtful and important program, and we urge our customers to participate."

Historic Sandwiches
Courtesy of Stop & Shop

History Reenacted in a Brown Bag -- Bernie Forte presents the
"Lindbergh" sandwiches to Spirit of St. Louis pilot Kermit Weeks
while News 12's Carol Silva asks the obvious question for those
flying in the single- seat, single-engine historic replica:
" When does the inflight movie start?”

Only now are the quiet, behind-the-scenes stories coming to light surrounding the 75th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's solo flight from Long Island to Paris. The Lindbergh Foundation wanted the pilot flying the replica from Republic Airport to carry the same half-dozen ham sandwiches that Lindy took off with when he left for Paris ...but they would need them at 6 a.m. in the morning. Where to find such cuisine at that hour?

Enter Massapequa Stop & Shop Supermarket manager Bernie Forte. He arrived bearing a brown bag filled with the authentic food to make good on the attempt to respect history. Presenting the sandwiches to pilot Kermit Weeks, Forte said, “It’s great to play a part in recreating history. The irony is, these sandwiches are better than most inflight service offered today." Forte says he wanted to give the pilot a thermos filled with an egg cream but "mixing meat and milk for a Lindbergh reenactment wouldn't be kosher."

Amityville Stop & Shop
Welcomes New Manager

Welcome Aboard -- Amityville Stop Shop gets a daily inspection from its new manager that would make a drill sergeant proud. Ed Herzog is the person in charge and there is not a portion of the store that does not get his thorough review to ensure it meets tough standards

The Amityville Stop & Shop has a new manager, and his mandate is clear: spruce up, fix up, and roll out the red carpet for the thousands of loyal consumers who visit daily.

Stop & Shop Senior Vice President and General Manager for New York Chris Williams stated, "We are proud that we have appointed Edward Herzog to the position of Amityville Store Manager. There is no better professional who can effectively operate a supermarket, and there is no more demanding executive when it comes to providing a clean environment, fresh produce, well-stocked shelves and plenty of customer service. It requires a multidisciplinary approach to management and a commitment to service. Ed Herzog meets that strict standard."

"I’m proud to be appointed to this position," said Herzog. "I know that Amityville residents expect a store that can meet all their expectations. And I’m also aware that the surrounding community wants a supermarket that is a clean, quiet, and safe neighbor. Frankly, meeting those expectations is just as important to me as ensuring that the shopper inside finds what he or she needs."

Herzog acknowledged that Amityville is a community that prides itself on its quality of life, its history, and its future. "As one who has lived on Long Island most his life, I know that Amityville has a long and proud history. As the flagship supermarket for the community, we have an obligation to not only meet those standards but exceed them. Accordingly, we’ve begun an aggressive `pickup, cleanup, spruce up' program in and around our supermarket. It doesn't matter whether we were responsible for existing trash or rubbish deposits. If it’s near our property and impacting our neighbors, it's out of here."

Herzog says he will reach out personally to his Snug Harbor neighbors as he settles into his duties so that he can introduce himself and gain their feedback. "If we aren't connecting with the community we aren't doing our job," he said.
