Myths vs. Facts

Setting the Record Straight About Stop & Shop’s
 Proposed Farmingdale Supermarket:

Since Stop & Shop announced its plans to build a new full-service supermarket on the northwest corner of Main Street and Motor Avenue, in Farmingdale (on the eastern portion of the former Liberty Industrial Site), there has been a lot of misinformation floating around.  The following will help set the record straight about this proposed project:

  • MYTH # 1: "The new Stop & Shop in Farmingdale will result in too much additional traffic for the local roads to handle."

  • FACT:  Due to a number of improvements that will be made to the surrounding roads, under the direction of the New York State Department of Transportation and the Nassau County Department of Public Works, the level of service of these roads will be good. In addition, the total cost of these road improvements will be borne by Stop & Shop.

  • MYTH # 2: "Stop & Shop’s traffic study only says what the public wants to hear."

  • FACT:  Stop & Shop has conducted three traffic studies in accordance with the community’s requests, and in each instance the results have been the same. As a result of the planned road improvements, as reviewed by Nassau County, the level of road service will be good.

  • MYTH # 3: "Truck deliveries to the store will be made at all hours of the day and night."

  • FACT:  Based on the concerns raised by the community, Stop & Shop has agreed not to operate a 24-hour store, and to limit the hours when trucks can make deliveries.

  • MYTH # 4: "All the delivery trucks will be driving through the residential neighborhoods to get to Stop & Shop."

  • FACT:  All vendors are notified of the acceptable delivery routes, and compliance with them is strictly enforced.

  • MYTH # 5: "There are already too many supermarkets in the area so there is no need for another one in Farmingdale."

  • FACT:  Several studies indicate that approximately 30 percent of Farmingdale residents are currently leaving the area to buy their groceries elsewhere.  People are not getting the quality selection they desire, in a friendly, clean and well-lit environment. This store, which will be one of Stop & Shop’s first new prototype supermarkets on Long Island, will truly be for the residents of Farmingdale.

  • MYTH # 6: "The store will create unwanted noise and litter."

  • FACT:  Stop & Shop strives to be a good neighbor and will do whatever is necessary to ensure that any issues involving noise and litter will be addressed quickly and effectively. The site will be developed with pleasing landscaping, well-maintained grounds and state-of-the art lighting that will not adversely affect nearby residents.

  • MYTH # 7: "There are better alternative uses for the property besides a supermarket."

  • FACT:  While there might be different uses that could be developed on this property, Stop & Shop is ready to make a major commitment to the community to help clean up a polluted, toxic EPA Superfund site and put unproductive land back to productive use.  The new Stop & Shop will generate approximately $500,000 in additional tax revenues, create new jobs and provide a much needed service to the Farmingdale community.
